As I walked up our driveway, 13 year old Luke came through the gate, running towards me.
He excitedly exclaimed, “Mandy, I haven’t seen you for such a long time!” while throwing his arms around me and giving me a big hug.
It’s been six months, and Luke, who struggles with Prader Willis Syndrome has been busy collecting plastic bottleTops for our recycling fundraising, for a wheelchair for Fiso.
As I saw the boot load of plastic bottleTops, my heart just melted at the effort Luke and his family have made… not just collecting, also cleaning, drying and sorting.
Thank-you so much Luke, you will always have a special place in my heart.
Fiso lives not far from us, although it’s almost an hour’s drive in the heart of the Inanda Valley, amongst the Valley of a 1000 Hills, in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Fiso does have a very old wheelchair, it breaks often and Ant, from the KZN Valley Dogs has repaired it too many times.
Fiso is very thin and paralysed from the waist down, he needs a new wheelchair with off road tyres, and he requires a special cushion to ensure that he won’t suffer with anymore bedsores. The wheelchair can be manufactured locally, however the cushion needs to be ordered from overseas… so we are fundraising and recycling plastic bottleTops to raise the +- R15 000 ($1000) we need.
Although we could just purchase a less expensive wheelchair for Fiso, this won’t solve the issue of his bedsores, or ensure his comfort, or last very long in the rural place where he lives. Fiso has very strong arms, and whilst he is dependent on his family for most of his needs, he loves being able to manage his own mobility.
We’ve recycled 858 kg’s of plastic bottleTops, with funds going to The sweethearts Foundation, and with Luke’s contribution of almost 50 kg’s, and others… we are hoping to reach 1000 kg’s this “Plastic Free July”.
Please contribute to our fundraising efforts, and help us give Fiso, the gift of mobility, and so that Luke can present Fiso with his new wheelchair.
